Rain has interrupted day three of the Ashes test — ESPN Cricinfo

Day three of the first Ashes Test has ended with England scoring 28-2 before the game was stopped by rain on Sunday.

Ollie Pope (0) and Joe Root (0) will resume the batting for England on day four.

England leads by 35 runs in the second innings.

England lost two wickets in two overs in the second innings as Ben Duckett and Zack Crawley headed back to the pavilion after scoring 19 and seven runs respectively.

Australia were all-out for 386 runs in their first inning on day three.

Alex Carey, who resumed Australia’s innings with the centurion Usman Khawaja on day three, departed for the pavilion after scoring a fighting knock of 66 runs as he was bowled by James Anderson, who also completed 1,100 wickets in first-class cricket.

To get the wicket of Khawaja, English skipper Ben Stokes set up a ridiculous field, with six catchers in front of the wicket, taking the attacking mindset to the whole next level to dismiss the Australian opener after scoring a remarkable knock of 141 runs.

Earlier in England’s first innings on day one, Ben Stokes took the cricket world by surprise as he declared the innings at 393-8 with ton-up Joe Root still on the crease.

Joe Root remained unbeaten as he scored 118 runs courtesy of seven fours and four sixes.

Australia: David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland.

England: Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jonny Bairstow (wk), Moeen Ali, Stuart Broad, Ollie Robinson and James Anderson.
